6-Day Sahara Experience for Students Itinerary
Tangier Port to the Blue Pearl
Your 6-day Sahara experience for students kicks off right at the Tangier Port. As soon as you clear customs, our team is there to grab your bags and head south. We make a break for Chefchaouen, the famous blue city tucked into the Rif Mountains. After checking into a cool local riad, we spend the afternoon lost in the indigo alleys. It is a laid-back immersive experience to start your trip, ending with a hike up to the Spanish Mosque for a panoramic view of the city. For those on student trips to Morocco, there is no better first impression than the quiet vibes of the north.
Overnight: Riad in ChefchaouenChefchaouen to the Medieval Fes
We leave the blue walls behind and head toward Fes, the cultural and spiritual capital. Fes is where history feels alive. We spend the afternoon getting our first taste of the medina, a labyrinth of 9,000 streets that feels like a massive outdoor museum. We’ll visit the tanneries and old schools, guided by native-speaking local guide who explain the layers of history without making it feel like a boring lecture. This is a staple for students trips in Morocco, offering a raw look at a world that hasn’t changed in centuries.
Overnight: Riad in FesThe Middle Atlas & The First Sand
Today is a long but epic drive. We climb through the Middle Atlas mountains, stopping in Ifrane, which looks more like Switzerland than Africa, and the ancient cedar forests of Azrou to hang out with the local monkeys. We then drop down into the Ziz Valley, following the palm groves until the landscape turns to gold. By sunset, we reach Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara. Seeing the massive Erg Chebbi dunes for the first time is the moment most tours from Tangier for students are built for.
Overnight: Hotel in MerzougaSahara Adrenaline & Nomad Culture
This is the big day. We spend the whole day living the desert life. We head out for some hands-on activities for SAS students, starting with a 4×4 off-road tour to visit a nomad family and learn about their resilience in the desert. In the afternoon, the pace picks up, we jump on ATVs for a quad biking ride over the dunes and try our hand at sandboarding. We end the day with a camel trek into the deep dunes to reach our camp. Dinner is served under the stars, followed by live Berber music around the bonfire. It is the highlight of our 6-day Sahara experience for students.
Overnight: Sahara Desert CampZiz Valley Overlook & Fes Return
We catch the sunrise over the dunes before heading back to civilization. The drive back north offers a different perspective on the landscape. We’ll stop at the Ziz Valley overlook for some of the best group photos of the trip, think thousands of palm trees carved through a deep canyon. We make our way back through the mountains and arrive in Fes by evening. This gives you one last night to explore the medina or grab a rooftop dinner with your group, making it one of the most balanced study abroad trips to Morocco.
Overnight: Riad in FesBack to the Tangier Port
On our final day, we head back toward the coast. We’ve timed this drive specifically for the ship schedules at Tangier Port or Tangier Med. We’ll stop for a final Moroccan lunch on the way and get you back to the port with plenty of time to spare. You’ll head back to the ship with a camera full of desert shots. This 6-day Sahara experience for students is designed to maximize every hour of your port stop, ensuring you don’t miss a single highlight.
