Day 1
Marrakech to Zagora, via Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley
The first day of this 4-day Erg Chigaga desert tour, one of our desert trips from Marrakech, sets a gentle pace on purpose: out of Marrakech, up over the Tizi n’Tichka pass and a short pause in Ouarzazate.
Then we head south along the Draa Valley as the road follows the river through Agdz to Zagora. There’s no need to rush, since the real distance comes tomorrow: tonight is for settling in and getting an early night before the desert crossing.

Day 2
Zagora to Erg Chigaga, via M’Hamid
South of Zagora the road simply stops at M’Hamid. From here a private 4×4 takes over for the two-hour piste into Erg Chigaga, leaving the last paved town behind for the genuinely remote dune fields beyond.
A camel waits at camp to carry you up the nearest ridge for sunset, and dinner is served by lantern light once the last colour has drained from the sky. It’s the first of two nights here, the part of this trip that sets it apart from a quick overnight detour.

Day 3
A full day in the dunes of Erg Chigaga
With nowhere to be and nothing on the schedule but the desert itself, today is about staying rather than moving. Most guests are up before the sun for a short climb to watch the dunes change colour, then spend the cooler morning hours sandboarding or on an optional quad outing across the flatter ground beyond camp.
In the early afternoon, a 4×4 visit to a family living at the edge of the erg is there for anyone interested, while the rest of the day stays deliberately open. A second night under canvas follows, with dinner again and far more time to simply sit with the view than a one-night stop could ever allow.

Day 4
Erg Chigaga to Marrakech, via M’Hamid, Zagora and Ouarzazate
The drive home reverses the route that brought you here: back through M’Hamid to Zagora, then up the Draa Valley towards Ouarzazate, where a lunch stop breaks up the day before the final climb over the High Atlas.
It’s a long day after two nights of doing very little, but retracing familiar ground keeps timings predictable, and you’ll be back at your Marrakech riad or hotel by early evening, closing out your 4-day Erg Chigaga desert tour.

How is this different from the 3-day Erg Chigaga tour?
The route out to Erg Chigaga and back is the same, but this version adds a second night at camp, with a full day in the dunes and nothing scheduled.
Is two nights at the same camp better than splitting the stay?
For Erg Chigaga, yes. The camp itself is the destination, so a second night means more time on the dunes and less time repacking the vehicle.
Can we take a different road home, like the Foum Zguid loop?
Yes. The Foum Zguid loop is available if you’d rather not retrace the outbound route. It adds a little more driving, but Day 4 covers new ground.
How much driving is there?
Day 3 has no driving at all, so you get one genuine rest day. Day 4 retraces the outbound route: predictable timings, but still a full day in the vehicle.
What should I pack?
Two nights at camp means more temperature swings to plan for: bring a proper layer for after dark and something breathable for sandboarding.
Erg Chigaga or Merzouga: which should I choose?
