5-Day Sahara Desert Trip from Tangier Itinerary
Tangier – Rif Mountains – Chefchaouen
Your 5-day Sahara desert trip from Tangier starts the moment we meet you at the port or airport. We leave the coast and climb into the cool, green ridges of the Rif Mountains. By midday, we reach Chefchaouen, the “Blue Pearl.” The medina here is a sanctuary of indigo and cobalt. Walk the quiet cobblestones, discover the artisan shops in the square, or hike up to the Spanish Mosque for a view of the blue city as it begins to glow at twilight. It’s the perfect, peaceful start before we head south toward the desert.
Overnight: Riad in ChefchaouenChefchaouen – Volubilis – Fes
We descend from the mountains after breakfast, heading toward the rolling plains of the Saiss. Our first stop is Volubilis, where Roman columns and intricate floor mosaics have survived for nearly two thousand years. After walking these ancient streets, we continue to Fes. This city is the spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco. We’ll spend the afternoon getting our first taste of the medina—a place where 9,000 streets weave together in a medieval web of spice, silk, and history. You’ll settle into a Riad deep within the old walls, where the sounds of the modern world finally disappear.
Overnight: Riad in FesFes – Ifrane – Cedar Forests – The Sahara Desert
Today is a journey of total transformation. We leave Fes and climb into the Middle Atlas, passing through Ifrane, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its alpine architecture. We’ll stop in the ancient cedar forests of Azrou to spot the wild Barbary macaques before descending into the Ziz Valley. Here, the landscape turns into a dramatic red canyon lined with thousands of palm trees. By late afternoon, we reach the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. You will go on a camel ride into the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi as the sun sets. The night is spent in a luxury desert camp, eating a traditional meal by the fire and sleeping under a canopy of stars.
Overnight: Luxury Desert Camp in MerzougaMerzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Fes
Waking up to a Saharan sunrise is an experience that stays with you forever. After breakfast in the dunes, we begin our return journey north. This is a day to appreciate the sheer diversity of the Moroccan landscape through the window. We pass back through the fossil-rich area of Erfoud and the apple-growing region of Midelt. As we cross back over the Atlas, the desert heat fades into the cool mountain air. We reach Fes by the evening, giving you one last night to enjoy the atmosphere of the medina or a final traditional dinner in a palace restaurant.
Overnight: Riad in FesFes – Rolling Plains – Tangier Departure
On the final day of your 5-day Sahara desert trip from Tangier, we make the journey back toward the Mediterranean.
