Day 1

Marrakech to Skoura or the Dades Valley, via Aït Ben Haddou

This 3-day luxury desert tour to Merzouga opens with a private departure timed to leave the city before the heat builds. The road climbs through Berber villages and walnut groves to the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 metres, where the High Atlas unfolds in every direction.

On the way down we stop at the ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, whose fortified towers have stood in for ancient kingdoms in many film and television productions. From there the route eases into the Skoura palm oasis or the Dades Valley, where your driver-guide checks you into a boutique kasbah chosen for its setting rather than its size.

Day 2

To the dunes of Merzouga, via the Todra Gorge

After a relaxed breakfast, we drive into the Todra Gorge, where sheer limestone walls press in on either side of a cool, palm-lined river. The road then passes through Tinghir and Erfoud, known for its fossil trade, before opening onto the flat hammada that signals the desert is close.

By late afternoon the dunes of Erg Chebbi rise on the horizon near Merzouga, and you trade the vehicle for a camel for the final approach. The sunset trek is unhurried, with plenty of time for photos, before you reach your private tent at the luxury camp, where dinner is served under canvas and the evening closes with music around the fire.

Day 3

Merzouga sunrise and return to Marrakech, via Ouarzazate

Most guests choose to be woken before dawn for the desert sunrise, watching the dunes shift from grey to rose to gold before breakfast at camp.

From Merzouga, your luxury desert tour heads back towards Marrakech through Ouarzazate, often called Morocco’s film capital, where a short stop at the Taourirt Kasbah is easy to arrange. The final leg crosses the High Atlas again, with your driver pacing the drive to your preference, and you reach your riad or hotel in Marrakech in the early evening.

Good to know

Before you go

The questions travelers ask most about this trip.

Is the desert camp really luxury, or just marketed that way?

Our partner camps have private ensuite tents with proper beds and hot water, not shared bathrooms or basic mats. We visit our camps in person before listing them.

Can we skip the camel trek?

Yes. A 4×4 transfer into the dunes can replace the camel ride for anyone who prefers it, with no change to the rest of the itinerary.

Is this tour private the entire way?

Yes. You’ll have your own vehicle, driver and pace from pick-up in Marrakech to drop-off, with no other travelers added to your group.

How is this different from your 3-day private desert trip?

Both are private and follow the classic Sahara route. This tour focuses on comfort, with a boutique kasbah stopover in Skoura or the Dades Valley, and returns via Ouarzazate. Our 3-day private desert trip stays in the Dades Valley and returns through the Draa Valley.

What should I pack?

Warm layers for the camp, as desert nights get cold even when the days are warm, and a light scarf against blowing sand during the camel trek.

Is 3 days enough?

Yes. Three days covers the route without feeling rushed. The camp is the slow part, so leave room to simply sit with the view.

Who drives us?

Drivers are selected for their experience on both mountain switchbacks and soft desert tracks, so the comfort stays the same the whole way.

When is the best time to go?

October to April is the most comfortable season. Summer days in the desert are very hot and winter nights can be cold, so we’ll help you plan around the weather.
