Day 1
Marrakech to Zagora, via Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley
This 3-day Erg Chigaga desert tour, one of our desert trips from Marrakech, opens with the easier half of the journey south: a crossing of the High Atlas at the Tizi n’Tichka pass and a short stop in Ouarzazate.
In the afternoon we follow the Draa Valley through Agdz and its strings of palm groves, reaching Zagora in time for a relaxed evening. Spending the first night here, rather than pushing straight to the dunes, means Day 2 starts fresh for the longer crossing ahead.

Day 2
Zagora to Erg Chigaga, via M’Hamid
From Zagora the tarmac runs out at M’Hamid, the last town before open desert, where you switch to a private 4×4 for the roughly two-hour piste crossing into Erg Chigaga.
Camels wait at camp for a late-afternoon ride up onto the highest dunes in time for sunset. Once the worst of the afternoon heat has passed there’s usually time for a short sandboarding run, before dinner under canvas and a sky with no competing light for miles.

Day 3
Erg Chigaga to Marrakech, via Foum Zguid and Ouarzazate
After the sunrise from camp and one more sandboarding run before the heat builds, the route loops back towards Marrakech via Foum Zguid, so you see new ground on the way home instead of the same palm groves and kasbahs twice.
It’s a long final day, around eight hours of road time including stops, broken up by a lunch stop in Ouarzazate before the last climb over the High Atlas. Expect to reach Marrakech by early evening, closing out your 3-day Erg Chigaga desert tour.

Is one night really enough in Erg Chigaga?

Erg Chigaga or Merzouga: which should I choose?

Why does the final day cover so much driving?
Returning via Foum Zguid avoids retracing the Draa Valley and Zagora, but it’s a longer way home than backtracking. Most travelers find the new scenery worth the extra hours.
Can this be combined with a stay in Marrakech?
Yes. Most travelers book it as an add-on to a Marrakech stay, since pick-up and drop-off are at your riad or hotel in the city.
What should I pack?
Pack light for the single desert night: a warm layer for the evening, with the rest of your luggage left in the vehicle rather than carried across the dunes.
Do I need to be fit?
Not especially. Sandboarding is optional but worth saving some energy for, given the long drives on either side, so it’s best not to pair this tour with a big night out in Marrakech beforehand.
