6-Day Atlas Mountains to Sahara Desert Tour Itinerary

01

Marrakech – Imlil

This Atlas Mountains to Sahara Desert tour starts with a short drive out of Marrakech to Imlil, the trailhead village at the foot of Jebel Toubkal. The afternoon is spent on a guided walk through the surrounding Berber villages, ending with lunch at a local family’s home, a genuine look at how mountain life here actually runs, included as part of the day.

Overnight: Guesthouse in Imlil
02

Imlil – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate

From Imlil the road drops back down toward Marrakech’s outskirts before climbing the Tizi n’Tichka and descending the far side into Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified Ksar whose clay towers have appeared in more film productions than almost anywhere else in Morocco. A stop here is enough to walk its narrow lanes before the final stretch into Ouarzazate, a town that has built much of its economy around the same film industry that made Ait Ben Haddou famous.

Overnight: Hotel in Ouarzazate
03

Ouarzazate – Agdz – Zagora – Tafraoute Sidi Ali (Off-Road)

South of Ouarzazate, the road follows the Draa Valley through Agdz and on to Zagora, tracing one palm grove after another along the river. Beyond Zagora, the asphalt ends and the route turns onto a genuine off-road piste toward Tafraoute Sidi Ali, an outpost with little around it but open desert in every direction. It’s a slower, rougher stretch of driving than anything earlier in the trip, and exactly the part of this itinerary that most standard circuits never attempt.

Overnight: Guesthouse, Tafraoute Sidi Ali
04

Tafraoute Sidi Ali – Ramlia – Merzouga

The off-road stretch continues from Tafraoute Sidi Ali along a track that once formed part of the Paris-Dakar Rally‘s Moroccan route, before reaching Ramlia, a small oasis village that appears almost without warning amid the surrounding emptiness. Lunch at a local restaurant, before the piste eventually rejoins more established tracks on the approach to Merzouga, where the dunes of Erg Chebbi come into view by late afternoon, with enough daylight left for a camel ride up onto the dunes before sunset.

Overnight: Desert Camp, Erg Chebbi (Merzouga)
05

Merzouga – Rissani – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley

After a sunrise walk on the dunes, the route heads back through Rissani, once the trading capital of the Tafilalt region, and on toward Tinghir, where the road narrows into the Todra Gorge beneath limestone walls running close to 300 metres high. A short final stretch brings you into the Dades Valley for the night, with its own run of kasbahs and wind-carved rock formations along the riverbank.

Overnight: Kasbah Hotel, Dades Valley
06

Dades Valley – Valley of Roses – High Atlas – Marrakech

The final day runs back through El Kelaa M’Gouna and the Valley of Roses, fragrant even outside the spring harvest season, then into the last climb over the High Atlas. We reach Marrakech by early evening, closing out a 6-day Atlas Mountains to Sahara Desert tour.

Know Before You Go

  • Vehicle: This route requires a genuine 4×4, not a standard sedan, for the off-road stretch between Zagora and Merzouga via Tafraoute Sidi Ali and Ramlia.
  • Connectivity: Mobile signal is unreliable to nonexistent between Tafraoute and Ramlia, so plan on being offline for most of day four.
  • Comfort: The off-road piste is rougher than a paved highway in every sense, expect a bumpier ride, more dust, and a slower pace than the daily distances might suggest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this itinerary suitable for a standard rental car?
No. The stretch between Zagora and Merzouga via Tafraoute Sidi Ali and Ramlia runs on unpaved desert tracks, including sections of the old Paris-Dakar rally route, so a proper 4×4 with an experienced driver is required for this tour.

What’s actually at Ramlia?
Our Home. It is a small oasis village in the middle of otherwise empty desert, reachable only by the off-road piste, an authentic look at the local nomad life and Berber culture.

How do we experience authentic Berber culture on day one?
Driving up from Marrakech, we step straight off the road and onto the ancient mountain trails with a local guide. You will explore traditional stone villages and share a completely private, home-cooked lunch inside a family home, immersing you in true valley life before you cross the Atlas tomorrow.

An Off-Road Route, Done Properly

Want to adjust the off-road stretch or add a night?

This 6-day Atlas Mountains to Sahara Desert tour relies on a genuine 4×4 for the piste through Tafraoute Sidi Ali and Ramlia, so the vehicle and driver are matched to that route specifically, if you’d rather skip the off-road stretch for a faster paved route to Merzouga, or add an extra night anywhere along the way, we’ll rebuild the plan around it.
