Towering red limestone walls of Todra Gorge rising above the canyon road near Tinghir, Morocco
Africa’s Premier Climbing Canyon

Todra Gorge

The Todra River has spent millions of years cutting through limestone here, and the result is a canyon narrow enough in places to nearly touch both walls and tall enough that the cliffs reach 400 metres straight up, more than the height of the Eiffel Tower. What started as a scenic stop on the road between Ouarzazate and Merzouga has become one of Africa’s best-known rock-climbing destinations in its own right, with more than 400 bolted routes running up walls of solid red limestone. Most visitors still just drive through; the ones who stop a little longer find a working palm oasis and Berber villages built right against the canyon’s base.

A Canyon The River Is Still Cutting

Todra Gorge formed the slow way: the Todra River, fed by snowmelt from the High Atlas, has spent something on the order of millions of years cutting through a band of limestone laid down when this part of Morocco still sat under a shallow sea. The result is dramatic rather than gradual to look at. Over its final stretch toward Tinghir, the canyon narrows sharply, and the last roughly 600 metres are the most extreme: walls climbing as high as 400 metres on either side of a riverbed road that, at its tightest point, leaves barely 10 metres between one cliff face and the other.

What turned Todra into more than a scenic drive-through was rock climbing. French climbers began bolting routes into the gorge’s compact red limestone decades ago, and the canyon now holds somewhere north of 400 routes, ranging from short single-pitch lines beginners can learn on to multi-pitch routes that take most of a day. The rock here has a reputation among climbers for being unusually solid and grippy, which is part of why a relatively small, remote canyon in the eastern High Atlas became one of the most recognized climbing destinations on the African continent.

None of this happens in isolation from daily life in the gorge. A working palm oasis runs along the canyon floor and the valley leading into it, irrigated by underground channels, khettaras, that carry water down from the mountains the same way they have for generations. Berber villages sit built directly against the base of the cliffs, close enough that climbers and shepherds often share the same narrow paths. Flash flooding is a real, if occasional, risk after heavy rain, since the same narrow walls that make the gorge dramatic also concentrate runoff fast; checking conditions before driving or walking through after a storm is standard local advice.

Plan for this: climbing gear can be rented right at the gorge entrance in Tizgui village, so non-climbers don’t need to bring anything to watch or try a short route. Most visitors pass through as part of a longer drive between Ouarzazate and Merzouga, though staying one night nearby makes the early morning light and the quieter gorge worth the extra time.

In The Canyon

What To Do At Todra Gorge

Six ways to experience the gorge, whether you’re here for an hour or staying long enough to climb.

Free · Easy

Walk The Narrowest Stretch

The final 600 metres of canyon, where the walls close in and rise highest, are walkable on the paved riverbed road in well under an hour. Early morning light works best, before the midday sun flattens the colour out of the rock.

Gear Rental On-Site

Rock Climbing

More than 400 bolted routes across dozens of sectors, from short top-rope lines suited to first-time climbers to multi-pitch routes that take most of a day. Local guides and equipment rental are both based in Tizgui village at the gorge entrance.

Free To Walk

The Tinghir Palm Oasis

A working palm grove running along the valley below the gorge, irrigated by underground khettara channels that have moved mountain water to these fields for generations. Walking paths thread between the trees and the kasbah ruins above them.

Respect Local Life

Berber Village Visits

Villages built directly against the cliff base, where daily life, shepherds, mule trains, date harvests, continues alongside the climbers and tour groups passing through. A local guide makes these visits considerably more meaningful than a drive-by glance.

Mondays Only

Tinghir’s Monday Market

One of the larger weekly markets in southern Morocco, held in the gateway town just outside the gorge, trading everything from livestock to dates, spices and Berber carpets. It’s a working market for locals first, tourists second.

Sunrise Or Sunset

Photography At Golden Hour

The red and orange limestone shifts colour dramatically as the sun moves, and the canyon’s narrowest section catches direct light only briefly each day. Photographers generally plan around early morning or the last hour before sunset.

Planning Your Visit

Best Time To Go

September through November and February through May give the most reliable climbing and walking conditions, with mild days and minimal rain. Summer heat in the surrounding valley regularly passes 40°C, though the canyon itself stays a few degrees cooler in shade.

Getting To Todra Gorge

Tinghir, the gateway town, sits about three hours from Ouarzazate and six to seven hours from Marrakech by road. The gorge entrance is a further fifteen kilometres along a paved route, easily covered by taxi or rental car from Tinghir.

Climbing Logistics

Gear rental and local guides are based in Tizgui village, right at the gorge entrance, so climbers without their own equipment can still book a route on arrival. Booking a guide in advance through a Marrakech-based climbing operator is worth it for multi-pitch routes.

What To Wear & Bring

Layers matter regardless of season, since the canyon floor stays shaded and noticeably cooler than the open valley around it. Sturdy shoes help on the uneven riverbed path, and climbers should bring sun protection even on cooler days, given how exposed the upper walls are.

Questions, Answered

Frequently Asked Questions About Todra Gorge

What travelers actually search before adding Todra Gorge to a Morocco itinerary.

Is Todra Gorge worth visiting?

Yes, even for a brief stop. The narrowest stretch of canyon, walkable in under an hour, delivers a genuinely dramatic sense of scale that’s hard to get from photos, and it sits directly on the common route between Ouarzazate and Merzouga.

Do you need climbing experience to visit Todra Gorge?

No. Most visitors simply walk the canyon floor and never touch a rope. Climbing is a major draw for a specific group of travelers, but it’s entirely optional for everyone else.

How tall are the walls at Todra Gorge?

Up to about 400 metres in the most dramatic section, roughly the height of a 100-storey building. The canyon narrows to around 10 metres wide at its tightest point.

Can beginners go rock climbing at Todra Gorge?

Yes, the gorge is well known as a place to learn. Many of its 400-plus routes are graded for first-time climbers, with gear rental and guided instruction both available at the entrance.

How far is Todra Gorge from Ouarzazate and Merzouga?

About three hours from Ouarzazate and a further two to three hours on to Merzouga, which makes the gorge a natural stopping point on that route rather than a separate detour.

Is Todra Gorge the same as Dades Gorge?

No, though they’re often visited together. Both are carved by rivers through the same general stretch of the eastern High Atlas, but they’re separate canyons with different character, and most itineraries pass through both on the same trip.

Is it safe to drive through Todra Gorge?

Generally yes, the road through is paved and well used. The main risk is flash flooding after heavy rain, since the narrow walls concentrate runoff quickly; checking local conditions before driving through during or after a storm is sensible.

What’s the best time of year to visit Todra Gorge?

September through November and February through May, which also happen to be the best months for climbing. Summer heat in the surrounding valley regularly passes 40°C.
