Day 1
Marrakech to Aït Ben Haddou, via Telouet and the Ounila Valley
Your 5-day desert Berber experience begins with a pick-up from your hotel in Marrakech. We head into the High Atlas and take a scenic detour along the old salt caravan route to the Kasbah of Telouet, a hidden gem of Moroccan architecture and a glimpse into the lives of the mountain lords.
The journey continues through the stunning Ounila Valley, where red rock contrasts with green riverbanks. We reach the UNESCO site of Aït Ben Haddou in the late afternoon, in time for a quiet walk through the ancient ksar before sunset paints its mud-brick walls.
Overnight in a riad or hotel in Aït Ben Haddou, with dinner and breakfast
Day 2
Aït Ben Haddou to the Dades Valley, via Skoura and the Valley of the Roses
After breakfast we head to the Skoura oasis to visit Kasbah Amridil, a living museum that shows how these earthen fortresses were built and maintained. The route then leads through the Valley of the Roses, filled with fragrant blooms in spring.
By midday we reach the Dades Valley and drive deep into the gorges to see the famous “Monkey Fingers” rock formations and the winding mountain road above the canyon, stopping for photos at every viewpoint along the way.
Overnight in a riad or hotel in the Dades Valley, with dinner and breakfast
Day 3
Dades Valley to Merzouga, via the Todgha Gorge
We travel to Tinghir, the entrance to the Todgha Gorge, with time to walk beneath 300-metre limestone cliffs above the narrow riverbed. After lunch, the scenery turns into the dry, volcanic plains of the pre-Sahara as we pass through Erfoud.
In Merzouga, you’ll meet your camel team and ride into the golden heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes to our private desert camp. The evening brings a traditional dinner by the campfire and a night under brilliant Saharan stars.
Overnight in a luxury desert camp in Merzouga, with dinner and breakfast
Day 4
Merzouga to Agdz, via Rissani and the Draa Valley
Wake early to watch the sun rise over the dunes, towards the Algerian border. After breakfast we visit Rissani, the cradle of the Alaouite dynasty and home to one of Morocco’s most authentic traditional markets, then cross the Jbel Saghro range and its rugged, moon-like landscapes.
The road descends into the Draa Valley, following Morocco’s longest river past date palms and ancient Berber villages. We end the day in the quiet oasis of Agdz, at a historic kasbah hotel among the palm trees.
Overnight in a kasbah or hotel in Agdz, with dinner and breakfast
Day 5
Agdz to Marrakech, over the Anti-Atlas and High Atlas
On the final day of your 5-day desert Berber experience, we cross the Anti-Atlas via the Tizi n’Tinififft pass, with panoramic views over the palm groves below. After Ouarzazate, we make the final climb over the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass.
We reach Marrakech by late afternoon, where your driver drops you off at your riad or hotel, with a deep understanding of the southern landscapes and the Berber way of life.
