The 4-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech That Fits Europe’s New Winter Flights
A 4-day desert tour from Marrakech is the shortest route that reaches Erg Chebbi without turning the trip into a driving marathon. Three days is possible and rushed. Four gives you two nights on the way, a full night in the dunes, and a return that goes through different route.
It has also just become far easier to reach. Ryanair’s Winter 2026 schedule for Morocco is its largest ever, 5.3 million seats across 156 routes, with 17 new ones, and Marrakech picks up direct service from Wrocław and Sofia, with Agadir adding Gdańsk, Milan, Nuremberg and Bratislava. For a lot of central Europe, a Sahara weekend just stopped requiring a connection.

What the Four Days Actually Cover
The route is a loop south over the Atlas, east along the valleys, out to the dunes, and back on a different road.
Day one: over the pass
Marrakech climbs into the High Atlas almost immediately and crosses the Tizi n’Tichka at over 2,200 metres. On the far side the landscape turns red and dry. You stop at Aït Ben Haddou, the fortified earthen village on the old caravan road, and reach the Dades Valley by evening.
Day two: gorges to dunes
Through the Todra Gorge, where the cliffs close to a few metres apart, then east across increasingly empty country to Merzouga. You reach the dunes in the late afternoon, cross into the erg by camel or 4×4, and sleep in a desert camp.
Day three: sunrise, then west
Sunrise over Erg Chebbi, then back out through Rissani and along the Draa Valley palm groves toward Ouarzazate or Skoura.
Day four: home the long way
Back over the Atlas to Marrakech, arriving in the afternoon with time for the medina before dinner.
What the fourth day buys you is the return leg. On a three-day version, day three is one long push back to Marrakech. With four, that drive is split and routed through country you have not already seen.

The four tour days are not the whole trip. Budget for arrival and departure on top.
Most European flights reach Marrakech in the afternoon or evening, which means a night in Marrakech before you start. That is not wasted time, it lets you see the medina and Jemaa el-Fnaa properly, and it means day one begins early.
So the realistic shape is six days: fly in, night in Marrakech, four days on the road, fly out on the morning of day six or the evening of day five. For most people that fits a week off work with a day either side to recover.
If your return flight is early, tell us when you book. We bring the last day forward rather than leaving you to make a four in the morning airport run after a long drive.
Why Winter Is the Right Time for This Trip
Counter-intuitively, the cold months are the best ones for the Moroccan desert, and the new flight capacity lands exactly when the conditions are good.
The driving is comfortable. Summer means hours in a vehicle in serious heat. Winter days in the south are usually mild and bright, which changes how the long stretches feel.
The sky is at its best. Clear, dry winter air over the erg produces the sharpest stars of the year. If the night sky is why you are coming, this is the season.
There are fewer people. Aït Ben Haddou and the Todra Gorge are noticeably quieter than in spring.
The trade-off is real and worth knowing: desert nights in winter get close to freezing. Camps provide heavy blankets and better tents have heaters, but it catches people out. We have written about exactly what that night is like in our guide to a night in a Sahara desert camp.
Flying In on a New Winter Route?
Send us your flight number and we will meet you at Menara and build the four days around your actual arrival and departure times, including an early final day if you need it.
Plan Around My Flights →Landing at Agadir Instead?
Several of the new winter routes go to Agadir rather than Marrakech, Gdańsk, Milan, Nuremberg and Bratislava among them. If the fare from your city is better that way, the desert is still reachable, it just changes the shape of the trip.
From Agadir you either transfer to Marrakech and pick up the standard route, or run a southern itinerary through the Anti-Atlas and the Draa Valley to the dunes. Both work. The second is the more interesting drive and the less travelled one.
Tell us which airport you are landing at before you book flights and we will tell you which version suits your dates better.
Three or Four Days?
The honest comparison, since both exist and both get booked.
Three days works if your time is genuinely fixed and you accept that the last day is a long drive. You still get the dunes, the camp and the gorges.
Four days is the version we recommend to almost everyone. The extra day removes the worst drive of the trip, adds the Draa Valley, and means you arrive back in Marrakech in a state to enjoy your last evening.
If you are weighing up cost as well as length, our guide to what changes between a €95 and a €470 desert tour covers what the price difference actually buys.
4-Day Desert Tour FAQ
Is four days enough for the Sahara from Marrakech?
Yes, and it is the shortest comfortable option. It gives two nights on the road, one in the dunes, and a return through the Draa Valley rather than back the way you came.
How much driving is involved each day?
Roughly five to seven hours on days one and two, less on days three and four. The roads are slow rather than difficult, with regular stops built in.
Do I need a night in Marrakech first?
Almost always. Most European flights land in the afternoon or evening, so the tour starts the following morning. It also gives you the medina, which is worth an evening.
Is the desert cold in winter?
Nights get close to freezing between December and February. Days are mild and pleasant. Camps provide heavy blankets and better tents have heating, but bring warm layers.
Can I start from Agadir instead?
Yes. Either transfer to Marrakech or take a southern route through the Anti-Atlas and Draa Valley. Tell us your arrival airport and we will suggest the better fit.
How far ahead should I book?
Two to four weeks is comfortable for most of winter. Book earlier for Christmas and New Year, when the better camps fill first.
Send Us The Dates And We’ll Build The Four Days Around Them
Tell us your arrival and departure times and how many of you there are. We’ll come back with an itinerary that fits the flights, the camp tier we’d put you in for the season, and a clear per-person price. If three days suits you better than four, we’ll say so.
