Is a Private Desert Tour Safe for a Solo Woman in Morocco?

Private desert tour in Morocco: a woman walking alone along a dune ridge at Erg Chebbi in the late afternoon

Yes. For a woman travelling alone, a private desert tour in Morocco is one of the most controlled ways to reach the Sahara, because the things that make solo travel stressful are settled before you arrive: who you travel with, where you sleep, when you move, and who to call.

This page is about that one decision. If you want the wider picture of travelling Morocco as a woman, we have covered it in our honest guide to solo female travel in Morocco. Here, we walk through exactly what a private booking looks like from the first message to the drive home.

Why Private Changes the Equation for a Woman Alone

On a shared minibus you are one seat among fifteen, the schedule belongs to the group, and the people around you are strangers you did not choose. That suits many travellers. For a lot of solo women it adds a layer of uncertainty they would rather not carry for three or four days.

Private removes it. There is one vehicle, one driver whose identity you know in advance, and one accountable company behind him. Nobody joins halfway. Nothing is decided by a vote. If you want to stop, leave early, skip a shop or stay longer at a viewpoint, that is the plan.

In short: a shared tour asks you to fit in. A private one fits around you.

What Happens When You Book: Step by Step

This is the sequence every solo guest goes through with us. Nothing on it costs extra.

1. Before you pay anything

Message us with every question you have, however specific. Who drives, which camp, how the tents are arranged, what happens if plans change. You should have written answers to all of it before a deposit changes hands.

2. Once you’ve booked

You receive your driver’s name, the vehicle’s registration, and a WhatsApp line to our office that stays open for the whole trip. Forward all of it to someone at home. That is exactly what it is for.

3. Arrival

You are met by name, at the airport, the train station or your riad door, by the driver whose name you already have. No searching for a sign in a crowd, no negotiating with strangers.

4. On the road

We plan every day to arrive before dark. You are welcome to share your live location with a friend throughout. Stops happen when you ask for them, and if you would rather sit quietly with headphones for two hours, that is entirely normal.

5. At camp

Tell us where you would like your tent, close to the main tent, near other guests, or quieter at the edge. Choose an en-suite tent and you never need to leave it after dark. Camp staff are on site through the night.

6. If anything feels wrong

Tell the driver or message the office. We change the plan, the room, the camp or the vehicle, without debate and without asking you to justify it.

Start With Questions, Not a Deposit

Send us what you would want to know before trusting anyone with three days of your holiday. We reply in writing, and you decide afterwards.

What You Get That a Group Can’t Give You

Safety is the reason most solo women first look at private. It is rarely the reason they say they loved it.

Your own pace. Early start for empty light at Aït Ben Haddou, a long lunch in the Dades, an hour doing nothing on a dune. None of it needs anyone else’s agreement.

Space to be quiet. Travelling alone is partly about not having to perform sociability for strangers. Private lets you talk as much or as little as you like.

Photography on your terms. Stopping the car because the light hit a ridge is impossible in a minibus and routine in a private vehicle.

A better night. Private bookings get a choice of camp tier, so you can pick the en-suite tent with heating in winter rather than whatever the group was allocated. We describe exactly what a night in a Sahara camp is like if you want the detail.

Is Private Worth It When You’re Travelling Alone?

Honestly: private costs more per person when there is only one of you, because the vehicle and driver are priced for the trip rather than the head. That is simply how it works.

What you are paying for is certainty over the three or four days most people remember for the rest of their lives. For many solo women that is the easiest money on the whole trip.

If budget is a concern, two things help. Travelling with one friend roughly halves the per-person cost while keeping everything private. And the four and five-day routes spread the vehicle cost across more days, so they often represent better value per day than a rushed three-day trip.

Our Most Booked Route for Solo Women

Which Route Suits You?

Short on time, landing in Marrakech: the 3-day private trip reaches the dunes and back. The last day is long, but it works.

Want it unrushed: the 4-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour. The one we recommend most often.

Want time to settle in: the 5-day Sahara discovery adds slower days in the valleys and a longer stay near the erg.

Arriving in the north: start in Fes and finish in Marrakech on the 3-day or 4-day one-way route. No backtracking.

Landing long-haul in Casablanca: the 6-day route covers the dunes properly, and the 11-day coast and desert tour adds the Atlantic towns for anyone who wants a slower, fuller trip.

Not Sure Which One?

Private Desert Tour in Morocco: FAQ

Is a private desert tour safe for a solo woman?

Yes. You travel with one known driver from an accountable company, arrive in daylight, choose your tent and have an office line throughout. It removes most of the uncertainty of shared travel.

Will I know who my driver is before I travel?

Yes. Once you book, we send the driver’s name and vehicle registration, which you can share with someone at home before you leave.

Can I share my live location during the tour?

Yes, and we encourage it. Mobile coverage is good on most of the route, though it thins out close to the dunes and at camp.

Can I choose where my tent is at camp?

Yes. Ask to be near the main tent, beside other guests, or somewhere quieter. An en-suite tent means you never need to cross the camp at night.

What if I want to change something mid-trip?

Message our office directly. We adjust the plan, accommodation or vehicle. Your comfort decides, not the itinerary.

Is a private tour more expensive for one person?

Per person, yes, because the vehicle and driver are priced per trip. Travelling with a friend roughly halves it, and longer routes spread the cost across more days.

Planning to Go Alone?

Tell Us Your Dates. We’ll Handle The Rest.

Share your arrival city and how many days you have. We’ll send a private itinerary with your driver’s details, the camp we’d choose for you, and a clear price, plus answers to anything you want to ask first. No obligation until you’re certain.
